Introduction

The Belmont Stakes otherwise known as the “Run for the Carnations” is a highly prestigious Grade One race that takes places annually in June at the Belmont Park Racecourse in Elmont, NY. It is run over 1½ miles on a left handed dirt track and is restricted to three year old colts and fillies and represents the third and final leg of the highly coveted Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, known by its shorter version of the Triple Crown. The Belmont Stakes carries a prize fund of $1m.

The first Belmont Stakes was ran way back 1866, only a year after the end of the American Civil War. It has over the years developed a very exciting reputation with a host of great traditions which you should note by reading the Belmont Stakes History.

The Belmont Stakes runners for the 2009 race can be seen by clicking the link. It looks like ten horses will go to post led by Kentucky Derby winner, Mine That Bird who currently heads the 2009 Belmont Stakes betting market. This year the race will be run on 6th June and it will televised live in the UK by Sky Sports, Atheraces.

Sadly no horse can win the Triple Crown this year, but Mine That Bird, who won the Kentucky Derby on May 3rd and was a gallant second behind Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness Stakes, certainly has a great chance to be highly placed in this third leg. Rachel Alexandra sadly will not be running.

Despite the fact that no horse can win the Triple Crown, jockey Calvin Borel atill can. He will be reunited with Mine That Bird in this race after winning on him in the Kentucky Derby before switching to Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness Stakes.

There are one or two other horses who are win with great chances in this race, Dunkirk is one who springs to mind, despite running poorly in the Kentucky Derby. He was not right in himself that day but has shown fine form on the gallops ever since. The other who we like is Charitable Man, who has been saved for this race following an injury. He is a class horse and his stable are very bullish about his chances. See Belmont Stakes Form guide for more.
